Week 4 – “Everlasting Father”
Smitchell   -

The fourth name in Isaiah 9:6 is “Everlasting Father,” which refers to the fatherly care that this child-king will show God’s people. He is from everlasting — there is an eternal quality to his person and mission — and he cares deeply for his people with fatherly love, patience, and protection. Isaiah has Israel’s Messiah in sight as he writes.

In addition, John’s Gospel, especially chapter 17, highlights the familial relationship Jesus (Isaiah’s promised child-king) has with God, the Father. By looking at Jesus’ revelation of God’s fatherhood and love, we can better understand Isaiah, appropriating the hope, healing, freedom, and flourishing that comes as we rest in the love of our good Father God.
