THURSDAY • MARCH 3
The season of Lent always begins on Ash Wednesday. During this shortened week of Lent, we will reflect on the story of Jesus’ encounter with a blind beggar (or two beggars, according to Matthew). The attitude of this beggar demonstrates the perspective that we hope each of us has as we enter the season of Lent: desperate and hungry for what Jesus has to offer us. As we seek Jesus, we can be comforted that He takes the time to notice us and our needs.
Scriptures for this week:
Matthew 20:29-34, Mark 10:46-52, Luke 18:35-43
What Do You Want?
By: Ashleigh Rich (Course + Content Lead)
“What do you want me to do for you?” If I put myself in this story, I can imagine Jesus bending down to Bartimaeus’ level as he sat begging on the ground. The Lord knelt and looked Bartimaeus in the eyes. Bartimaeus may not have been able to see, but he could feel the kindness and care of Jesus’ eyes upon him. Jesus then honestly and compassionately posed this question to him, which acknowledged his need but asked what he truly wanted. Bartimaeus responded honestly and asked for healing. Jesus displayed His kindness by heeding his request.
As we enter into this Lenten season, can you imagine Jesus posing this question to you? Jesus sees you where you are; He knows your hopes, joys, heartaches, and unmet desires. He sees you like He saw Bartimaeus. While you may have your physical sight, all of us have something we desperately long for. How would you honestly answer this question if Jesus posed it to you? What do you want Him to do for you? Do you trust His kindness to hear you and act on your behalf? Jesus responded with compassion and grace to Bartimaeus. He will respond in the same way to you.
Questions for Reflection:
Think: As you read the story of blind Bartimaeus, what stands out to you? What do you learn about Jesus from this story?
Pray: Spend some time in prayer today and imagine Jesus asking you, “What do you want me to do for you?” Be honest with God about your desires and what you would like from Him this season.
Respond:Stories like this one remind us of God’s kindness and faithfulness. These reminders help us not to forget the goodness of God’s character. Today, spend some time reflecting on ways that God has fulfilled needs and desires in your life, ways that He has shown Himself to be faithful and kind. Take some time this week to ask others for stories of God’s faithfulness and kindness in their lives. Keeping these stories in mind can serve as reminders of God’s goodness in hard times.
